Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Education

"Knowledge that stays on the page
has never saved a patient."
After ten years directing an OMFS residency program, one pattern became impossible to ignore: residents who could recite textbook chapters verbatim would freeze at chairside when a real patient presented with a complex case. The gap between knowing and doing is not a failure of intelligence — it is a failure of the educational model we have relied on for decades.
Traditional surgical education asks residents to absorb enormous volumes of foundational material and then, almost by osmosis, translate that knowledge into sound clinical judgment. But critical thinking is not a passive skill — it must be taught, practiced, and stress-tested against the unpredictability of real patients. Reading about flap design is not the same as deciding which flap to use when anatomy deviates from the diagram.
OMFSknowledge was built to close that gap. We are developing a platform where the factual foundation of oral and maxillofacial surgery — pharmacology, anatomy, pathology, technique — is not simply presented, but actively applied to the clinical cases that expose its nuance. Every module will challenge residents to analyze, reason, and decide rather than recall and recite.
This is the education the next generation of surgeons deserves: rigorous, case-driven, and relentlessly focused on the one outcome that matters — confident, competent care at the chair.
